But it only makes 230 hp out of 454 cubic inches!
Motherfucker it’s a Mark IV/Gen V big block backed by a TH400/4L80 (in 91) and either 3.73 gears (90) or 4.10 (91+) in a 14 bolt rear (9.5" ring gear).
You can literally open a Jeg’s catalog and double this thing’s HP in a weekend- and not have to mess with the drivetrain. Maybe the torque converter.
This truck is, and always has been, tons of potential with a red bow on it.

shhhhhhhh........
some of us are still working on getting our hands on one....

The regular chevy 2500 of that vintage is the worst car I have ever driven. Seriously.

Can’t the same be said about 350 powered trucks though?
![]() 01/25/2018 at 18:49 |

yuppity yup yup. do people not remember how engines were 30 years ago? Truck engine, truck power curve. Derp.

The internet is no place for opinions backed by facts, reason, or logic.

No. Good luck with that 700R4, for starters.

No joke. It’s like people don’t understand hot rodding at all. The same type of idiots spout off about mid 70's Vettes.

Cool trucks. But I prefer the Gen I Lightning.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 18:53 |

Fair. That said, 4L80's are rated at like 425 ft lbs.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 18:53 |

Depends on the year, but the 350 in my stock ’95 was supposedly rated at 200hp/300tq IIRC. It’s mated to a 4L60E and 3.42 rear.

My dad had one when I was in high school and that truck was a fucking blast to drive! Summit white with a red interior.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 18:58 |

Most builders put it realistically at 500-600 depending on weight of vehicle and abuse. 3rd gear is the first thing that goes IIRC.

I mean, Im kind of idiot and especially an idiot for hot rodding, but do people really think the 230 hp you get from a motor like this is comparable to the 230 hp you’d get from a high strung 4?
![]() 01/25/2018 at 18:59 |
|
Well, yeah, obvs. 230 = 230 bro!
![]() 01/25/2018 at 19:13 |

Look at that thing. It’s glorious!
![]() 01/25/2018 at 19:29 |

230 HP.
And approximately all of the torques. Gib
![]() 01/25/2018 at 19:44 |

My dad had a new ‘95. I know you’re right about the HP rating, but I don’t think the torque rating was quite that high. High 200's I believe.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 19:45 |

Yeah, but there’s no talking to those idiots. I didn’t engage.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 20:05 |

It was a torque monster though.

Been a while since I looked it up, so I might have been rounding those numbers...
Hm, now that I revisit it, I’m getting some conflicting info.
This ItStillRuns page on 1995 models
lists them by compression variant and claims 180hp/295tq for my C2500. But I’m also seeing some forum members say it’s 200-210/300. To support that, here’s a nice organized
chart
with figures “straight out of a GM Factory Service Manual”, that even lists my engine’s LO5 RPO code. BUT that chart is for previous-gen trucks...
I’d like to think that being a ’95, and therefore one of the last TBI/flat tappet 350s, it would be at the high end of whatever stock figures come up for LO5. Hard to find an authoritative source to confirm, though.

this 454 made 335hp on the engine dyno but the torque was 485ft/lb swap heads and cam mae 567hp and 537 ft/lb.
i feel sorry for anyone who left these things stock.

Yup. However.
That’s 230hp@3600 RPM. And that’s not the best part...
Torque. 385lb-ft of it. At SIXTEEN HUNDRED RPM.
yum
![]() 01/25/2018 at 21:24 |

385lb-ft@1600RPM.
Works for me.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 21:25 |

385@1600RPM, to be exact.

Yea that’ll do.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 22:37 |

ahh the 700R4, biggest piece of crap that has bolted up to a motor. Hate those things, never had a good one. That’s why the 90 SS454 is the only good one of the bunch. They had TH400's, the 91-92/93's had the 700

I love these trucks, especially the 90 version. They looked great bone stock, maybe a slight lowering but I cant stand how almost everyone of them has a cowl hood, roll pan instead of a bumper and clear lenses. Good clean original or barley modified versions are really starting to climb in value.
![]() 01/25/2018 at 23:07 |

Yeah, like when people laugh at 245hp Grand National, ignoring the 350 torques. Shit was 30 years ago.
![]() 01/26/2018 at 04:01 |

or just buy a real truck. Like a powerstroke
![]() 01/26/2018 at 06:54 |

Let’s just call it 200/300 then. Close enough!

There’s a dealer in my town that has one. Want’s about the same as the guy crazie canuck posted but 50k less miles.

That’s 118 hp at stall speeds. So hot.

trans death can be avoided with aggressive torque management in tune. With hopped up FWD 3800 engines we tune the 4T65e-HD to have an incredibly aggressive kickdown because ANY lug in 3rd gear = instant trans death when you start putting 350whp through these things. I’m developing electronics to easily mate up 3800 Series 2 engines with the 4t80e that lived alongside the Northstar and is SUPER plentiful due to being an unstoppable force of nature trans attached to a glass cannon engine.
